Pothole Escape Tools

Getting stuck in a pothole would kinda suck. You'd struggle for a while, then succumb to hypothermia. Soon - skeleton soup. So don't get stuck.

There's a couple techniques, and a couple tools available, for avoiding the soup thing.

Techniques: This is not a treatise on technique. But, in brief, some suggestions:

1. Plan Ahead - have your escape plan ready before getting yourself into the pothole.
2. Know Before You Go - have a good idea of what you are in for. Consider previous reported conditions in the canyon, recent precipitation or lack thereof, recently lowered lake levels, conditions in nearby canyons. Add a big handful of caution. Think early, think often.
3. Have a Strong Team. Having a variety of skills, and a variety of physical sizes, can be very useful in staying out of trouble or getting out of it when in it.
4. Some Actual Techniques: Pack Toss, Swimming Supported Climbing, Lots of Floatation.
5. Last Resort: Use a hand drill and hooks to bat-hook your way out. Do NOT use a G-Pick! Do NOT do more damage than absolutely necessary!

Nice little Cordura bags for tossing. They throw a lot better than a pack. You MIGHT be able to use them as an anchor. Emphasis on MIGHT.

The Happy Hooker is a pretty big hook on an eleven-foot pole. IF there's something to hook, it works pretty well. If not, not.
