  Specialized Gear for Extraordinary Places

America's Number One Maker of
Specialized Canyoneering Gear.

Canyoneering takes us to the most extraordinary places on the planet. Imlay makes gear for visiting these amazing places. Carrying stuff, managing the rope and escaping from potholes are challenges we find in the canyons - challenges that Imlay meets with you. We produce gear that works in the canyon environment, so you can concentrate on enjoying the canyon, its beauty, and its challenges.

Canyon Ropes

Canyoneering is really, really hard on ropes. Water, sand, awkward rappel starts, awkward rappellers - all these lead to ropes being scuffed across edges and an early death due to cuts in the sheath.

Imlay Canyon Ropes concentrate on toughness. We use 100% polyester fibers woven very tightly in a 16-bobbin mantle to pack as much fiber as possible into the sheath. Polyester absorbs WAY less water than nylon, and maintains almost all its toughness and strength when wet. These Polyester ropes are also very, very static - good for rappelling, not useful for climbing. Available in 8mm and 9mm sizes, and in many different lengths.

Accessories

The Imlay Canyon Knife is a cool little knife perfect for cutting webbing, rope, cheese or sausage. And that's it. Not good for anything else. It is small, sharp, and stays closed when hanging on your carabiner.

Carrying Stuff

Imlay Packs are designed from the ground up for canyoneering, and they really work. We start with burly Canyon Mesh (a heavyweight, nylon birds-eye style mesh), add 1000d Cordura, foam and the strongest plastic buckles made, then carefully design with the canyons in mind. The resulting packs are simple and elegant, drain instantly, and have just the features you need.

Managing the Rope

The rope WANTS to tangle - that is its job. Imlay makes Rope Silos and Pull Cord Bagettes so that you can quickly and easily manage the rope, without tangles. Silos and Bagettes are made for instantaneous drainage, have a bit of foam to add floatation, and stiff rims to make loading and using the rope as easy as the hike to Keyhole.

Escaping Potholes

Ending up as skeleton soup is not MY idea of a good time. Neither is drilling small holes and bathooking out of a pool. Not only is drilling tedious, but it is environmentally destructive. Imlay produces a couple of crazy items for escaping pots. The craziest part - they work! Imlay, Quandary, Upper Trail - these are a few of the places where the Happy Hooker has proven itself useful. If slow-pitch softball is in your past, Imlay Pot Shots are a good item to carry for precise and effective pack tosses.

Keeping Stuff Dry

Keeping stuff dry and protected is essential. Imlay Canyon Kegs are known world-over as the preferred method of protecting valuables while retaining quick access.

The Good Stuff

Let's not forget what this whole thing is about - The Canyons. Some people hate calling this thing a "sport", or even worse, an "EXTREME SPORT"! Canyoneering is about the canyons, descending the canyons, and being a visitor to these extraordinarily beautiful places. The gear? Sure, we make some cool gear, and it is fun to play with. But REALLY, this "activity" is about being a small person in an amazing place. Let the canyons seep into your soul. Allow the quiet, the mystery, the chaos to work its way deep into your being, making you calmer, gentler, sweeter.

Do a good job of enjoying the canyons - leave 'em how you find 'em. Pack out your trash, including your own body wastes - use natural anchors - miminize your impacts. Please. These are playgrounds we all must share - share nice.
