Plastic, screw-top kegs are the worldwide standard for keeping stuff dry. Imlay searched the flattest countries in the world to find superior, sturdy, UN-approved polyethylene kegs, and bring them across the pond to America.

Kegs work great. They provide reliable protection from water AND physical protection from crushing. A rubber seal inside the lid assures no water will pass. The sturdy kegs offer good protection from crushing, perfect for camera gear and sandwiches. The lid goes on and off easily, providing quick access to your well-protected camera. They also protect from the incessant sand found in the desert, sealing much better than a fabric and zippers camera bag.

Their snappy red and white color scheme brings a jolliness to any situation. They DON'T look like a camera bag, providing some stealth storage for your expensive camera gear.

I'm not a Canyoneer - why would I want a Canyon Dry Keg?

Kegs are useful anytime you want to keep stuff dry and clean. As a photographer, I keep my cameras in them as they float around the car - I don't need to worry about them even as much as a padded camera bag because kegs offer better physical protection. SAR people use them for personal gear and first aid kits. River Runners and Paddlers use them instead of Ammo cans. For day-hiking, I use them to keep my food fresh and not-crushed. And of course, they can be used anytime a medium sized drybag would be the "normal" choice.

Kegs and Cameras

Kegs with Nikon 8008 and zoom lensLarge SLRs such as this Nikon 8008 can be used with the Kegs. This particular rig does not fit in the Small Keg because the lens/body combo is a bit too long, being just over the 5-3/4" maximum depth. I might make it if I took the filter off, but who wants to do that. It easily fits in the large keg (shown).

About Using Kegs:

They're great. And there's a few things you should know.

The top seal can fail. If you try to cram too much stuff inside, it can interfere with closing the lid all the way - pushing against the stuff inside can feel like the last half-turn that seals the top. OR a cord or string can get caught in the top. OR sand or dirt on the seal can prevent forming an effective seal. Keep your keg clean, and don't overstuff.

The stuff inside the keg can rattle around and be damaged. Protect stuff inside the Keg with your spare hat, or a small towel which you can also use to dry and clean your hands.

Kegs are tough, but by no means indestructible. If you are a wanton canyoneer and toss your pack down things, don't be surprised if your Keg lid cracks. Inspect your lid from time to time - look for a small crack at the center of the lid.

If you wrap some duct tape around your keg, then you'll have some handy if you need it.

Since all kegs look the same, use a felt marker to write your name on the outside.

Imlay Packs are sized to fit kegs perfectly. Some people use a drybag for their clothing, and a keg for their food, emergency kit, camera, radios, etc.

Kegs are fairly well rounded, but do have sharp edges. Perhaps you should not use them in tight, narrow canyons where the edges pressing against the fabric will induce rapid pack destruction.

The lid can be leashed to the keg with a piece of small cord.
