In the dry canyons of the Colorado Plateau, I use a knife to cut away old webbing, occasionally cut a stuck rope, and cut webbing for anchors to the exact right length. Dicing up an apple, cheese or sausage is another task that calls for a knife. So, I don't need much, but I need something I can keep close at hand that will do these small tasks. The Imlay Canyon Knife is a nice little knife for cutting webbing and ropes. It clips to a locking biner to carry on your harness, and CANNOT open when clipped. Definitely not a wet-canyon Rescue Knife, but good for what it does, and very light weight.
Liabilities: it definitely is not a Whitewater Rescue Knife. Its petite size makes it hard to grasp for tasks requiring more force and effort like, say, cutting off your arm. It does a few specific tasks quite well. Hint: when carrying on a carabiner on your harness, lock the carabiner so the knife will not make a quick exit from your possession.
