Kolob Pack $ 174.95
|
Heading into a wet canyon? The Kolob is the pack for you.
This is a serious pack, designed to work well in wet canyons. Its 40 liter capacity is enough for most day trips, but if things go wrong, the fold-up-bivy-pad provides a wee bit of insulation from the ground. With many canyon-specific features and superior drainage, nothing works as well in wet canyons.
Construction:
Insta-Drain Construction means water drains out instantly. Pull the Kolob out of a pothole, and it weighs what it is supposed to weigh, not 20 pounds more.
Burly Canyon Mesh and 1000 denier Cordura make for a sturdy pack. The simple design eschews dangly gewgaws that get chewed up and spit out by the canyon environment.

Layout
A fairly simple pack, the Kolob is laid out for maximum utility in the canyons. The smooth exterior ghosts through narrow canyons well. A pleated pocket on the front of the pack holds your favorite beverage, or can be used to stash slings; but lays flat when not in use. Drainholes at the bottom of the pocket allow trapped water to escape instantly.
Rather than closing with a zipper, the pocket closes with a strap and very sturdy plastic buckle. Why? 'Cause zippers break, either by chafing against the sandstone, or by fine sand infiltrating the coil. Zippers don't work, buckles do.
The pack is carefully shaped to synergize with Imlay 6.4 liter Canyon Dry Kegs. The Kolob easily fits 3 kegs, though I'm not sure why you would do that.

Lower side pockets act as reinforcement, and can hold all sorts of useful tools. Here, a Happy Hooker is held handy for helping hook handholds by the lower side pockets and dual side compression straps. The pockets, of course, have big drains at the bottom. |
Suspension
This thing carries pretty well. Beefy three-point shoulder straps are carefully shaped and lined with a plush, 3D Mesh. A fold up bivy pad inside the back of the pack places 3/4" of nice foam between you and the stuff you are carrying. The Tube-Light Frame makes the pack absolutely rigid, and the hipbelt is nicely shaped to hug the hips.
Helpful Canyon-Specific Features:
The shoulder straps are held on with 1" clip buckles. Should the pack become a serious encumberance in a rappeling, swimming, downclimbing or waterfall situation - clip clip - reach over and release the shoulder straps... voila, packs away!
As another treat, the sternum strap includes a whistle - always available and in a handy position.
|
A Sturdy Handle is easily grabbed or clipped. Rappel with the pack hanging from your harness, and don't worry about the straps pulling out like on most packs.
|
Reinforced Bottom
The butt on this thing is not only shapely, but also sturdy. Cordura and heavy Canyon Mesh is backed up by a thin layer of foam that mellows out anything sharpish in the bottom of the pack. The inside is lined with Mesh as a backup layer and to allow Instant Drainage.
|
Interior Features
Inside the pack is special too. A mesh backpocket is set up to use a watertank. Across the top of the back is a gear loop for racking your technical hardware and keeping it handy. A zipper allows easy access to the fold-up-bivy-pad, while maintaining a tight fit that is important to the suspension working.
|
In Canyon, you probably want to take the lid off, and tuck it in your drybag or Keg. Thanks to a clever configuration of straps and buckles, the lid straps cross over the top of the pack, holding the contents of the pack securely and minimizing the dangliness of the straps. An additional 1" strap over the top holds ropes securely, whether you are using the lid or not.
Bottom Line
This is one fine-tuned pack for slipping down the canyons. Simple, yet sophisticated. Hope you like it.
